About vaporizers

A vaporizer heats material to the point where its active compounds and aromatics are released as vapour, without reaching combustion. Temperature control is therefore the central feature rather than a luxury: different compounds are released across different temperature bands, so the setting changes both the flavour and the density of what you get.

Heating works one of two ways. Conduction places the material in direct contact with a hot surface — devices heat quickly and cost less, but material nearest the surface can scorch, so stirring between sessions helps. Convection passes hot air through the material instead, giving noticeably more even extraction and cleaner flavour, at a higher price and usually a longer warm-up. Hybrid designs combine both.

The other decision is portable against desktop. Portables run on a battery and are built for use away from home, trading capacity and consistency for size. Desktop units run from mains power, deliver far more consistent temperature and are designed for longer sessions, often through a balloon or a whip. Whichever you choose, regular cleaning is what keeps flavour intact — residue accumulates in the chamber and vapour path and dulls everything that follows.

How to choose

Conduction or convection
Conduction heats faster and costs less. Convection extracts more evenly with cleaner flavour, at a higher price and a longer warm-up.
Portable or desktop
Portables prioritise size and battery life. Desktop units give more consistent temperature and suit longer sessions at home.
Temperature control
Precise degree-by-degree control gives far more command over flavour and vapour than a device offering three fixed presets.
Cleaning and upkeep
Check what tools and spare screens are included, and how easily the vapour path comes apart. An awkward device to clean is one that gets cleaned rarely.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between conduction and convection?

Conduction heats material by direct contact with a hot surface: fast and cheaper, but prone to uneven results, so stirring between sessions helps. Convection passes hot air through the material, giving more even extraction and cleaner flavour at a higher cost and usually a longer warm-up.

What temperature should I use?

Lower settings favour flavour and produce lighter, cooler vapour; higher settings produce denser vapour and extract more completely, with a harsher draw. Most units cover roughly 160–220°C. Starting low and stepping up during a session is the usual approach.

How often should a vaporizer be cleaned?

Brush the chamber after every few sessions, and give the vapour path a full clean with isopropyl alcohol every week or two under regular use. Residue builds quickly and is the most common reason a unit that once tasted good no longer does.

Should I choose a portable or a desktop unit?

A portable if it needs to travel — it is battery-powered and compact, with some trade-off in capacity and consistency. A desktop if it will stay in one place: mains power gives much steadier temperature and supports longer sessions, usually via a balloon bag or whip attachment.

How long does a portable vaporizer battery last?

Broadly four to ten sessions per charge, depending on capacity and the temperature used, since higher settings draw more power. Units with removable cells or USB-C pass-through charging can be kept running while plugged in.
