About coils & accessories

A coil is a wire heating element wrapped around wicking material. It is a consumable: every coil has a finite life, and replacing it on schedule is the single biggest factor in whether a device tastes good. Most complaints about a device that "stopped working properly" are a coil at the end of its life.

Coils are not interchangeable between brands. Each manufacturer designs its own fitment, so a coil is specified by the device or series it belongs to rather than by size. Check the exact model name on your device before ordering, since manufacturers frequently sell several incompatible coil families under one brand.

The other large group here is batteries and charging. Removable cells — 18650 and 21700 formats — should be bought as matched pairs where a device takes two, kept in a protective case during transport, and retired when the wrap is torn or the cell no longer holds charge. A loose cell carried in a pocket with keys or coins is a genuine short-circuit hazard, which is why cases are worth buying alongside them.

How to choose

Match the coil to the exact model
Order by device or coil-series name, not by appearance. Similar-looking coils from the same brand are frequently not interchangeable.
Check the resistance and wattage range
Coils are printed with a resistance and a recommended wattage band. Running above that band burns the wick; running well below it produces thin, cool vapour.
Always prime a new coil
Wet the exposed wicking material directly, fill, then wait five to ten minutes before the first draw. Skipping this is the most common way a new coil is ruined immediately.
Buy batteries in matched pairs
In a device taking two cells, use two of the same brand, model and age, charged together. Mixing cells is a safety issue, not just a performance one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which coil fits my device?

Coils are sold by device or coil-series name. Check the model printed on your device or on the coil you are replacing, and match that name exactly. Coils are proprietary to their manufacturer and are not cross-compatible between brands.

How often should a coil be replaced?

Typically one to two weeks with regular use. Sweetened, dark or dessert liquids shorten this markedly because sugars caramelise onto the coil. The dependable indicator is taste rather than the calendar: replace when flavour dulls or turns harsh.

Why does a new coil taste burnt immediately?

It was almost certainly not primed. Drip liquid onto the wicking holes, fill the tank or pod, then leave it standing for several minutes so the wick fully saturates. Firing a dry wick scorches it in the first second, and that cannot be undone.

Can coils be cleaned and reused?

Rinsing may buy a little time, but it does not restore performance: the residue that dulls flavour is baked onto the wire and into the wick. Coils are designed as consumables and are inexpensive to replace.

How should removable batteries be handled?

Carry cells in a protective case, never loose in a pocket where they can contact keys or coins. Inspect the plastic wrap regularly and re-wrap or retire any cell that is torn, dented or no longer holding charge. In two-cell devices, always use a matched, equally-charged pair.
